DISCUSSION: Why I Read Fantasy

So Ruby, why do you read so much fantasy?

I. Escapism – In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.
I read fantasy for escapism. For the pure, unadulterated bliss of fully immersing myself in a world that is foreign to others. Whether it be the comfort of a hobbit hole or the wide stretches of Westeros: I read fantasy for escapism. Besides, dragons are definitely preferable to geography homework – regardless of how war-ravaged the world is.

II. Characters – He's wild, you know. Not like a tame lion.
I read fantasy for characters who embrace this impossibility. For the characters who terrify me and the characters I love the dearest. I read fantasy for the characters who aren't human and the characters who are humans experiencing the unknown. :)

III. Uncertainty – When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die…
And, of course, I read fantasy for the uncertainty: the unexpected journey. I read fantasy because half the time I have no clue what will happen. I read fantasy because it is a boundless genre in all senses of the word. In short, I read fantasy because it always offers a new perspective on everything – regardless of whether that "everything" is fictional.

  1. Great post. I know I read fantasy to escape from reality for a little while, but also because the characters are so unique from one book to the next and you highlighted those things really well here. The hobbit gifs made me smile a lot.

  2. Love this post. Escapism is also why I enjoy fantasy. I find it very easy to become engrossed in a fantasy novel.

  4. This is great! It definitely sums up why I love fantasy, too.

I agree that fantasy is a wonderful escape and, like you said, it gives a new perspective about everything. It reminds me of the quote: "Fantasy is hardly an escape from reality. It's a way of understanding it." (Lloyd Alexander)

Fantasy is probably my favorite genre. There are so many amazing fantasy stories.

  6. This is perfect. Yes, yes, yes. I love that feeling of being immersed in a completely different world. I especially love it when that world won't let go of you. Those are books you never forget.

  7. I love fantasy mostly because of the escapism. Sometimes you need something other than just the normal world haha because it get's boring!

    1. I LOVE Lord of the Rings. I read the first one a couple of years back so I had to re-read it last year so I could finish the trilogy. The Shire is literally one of my favourite places EVER. :)

  10. Love this post so much. Fantasy is one of my favourite genres! I love it because it is a way to escape as well. The characters are also another factor that draws me to them. Harry Potter & the gang, Frodo & Sam, Arya, ohh I could go on... :D

  11. I absolutely adore this post. I got into reading fantasy and epic fantasy around october of 2013 (pretty recently actually) and I couldn't have said it better myself. And those gifs are bringing up great memories, XD

  12. Fantasy helps you escape into a world of impossibly high mountains (LOTR) and into the quiet nooks of a girl with no control (The Girl With Borrowed Wings). You get to see what people (and other "creatures) do in times of epicness.

  13. I sooo agree, I love fantasy so much, because most of all, you can escape somewhere so magical, and characters are such a unique mix of anything, and everything is possible...
I never understood how people don't like that! It's amazing.

  14. Agree! The fantastical worlds are so fun and the characters are so different than people we see on a daily basis - so reading fantasy is just so much fun!

  16. YOu are so so right. I also need all of those things and frankly - why do I want to read about "real" life - I am living it. I need magic, mystery, the unreal! Take me away .....
