After the tragic sinking of a cargo ship, a solitary lifeboat remains bobbing on the wild blue Pacific. The only survivors are a Pi, 16-year-old boy, a spotted hyena, a zebra with a broken leg, a female orangutan and a 450-pound Royal Bengal Tiger. As the 'crew' begin to grow restless and assert their natural place in the food chain, Pi's fear mounts and he must use his wit, knowledge and faith to survive against all odds.
Life Of Pi is a real treat for the imagination, an astonishing novel that will delight and stun readers in equal measures.

My Thoughts: I really enjoyed this book. Not only is it funny, clever, beautiful and thought-provoking, but it's very original. Can you name any other books about a 16-year-old boy who get's stuck in a life boat with a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan and a tiger named Richard Parker? I thought not... As I mentioned in the short intro, this book is a tiny bit slow. It took me longer than usual to read, and, even though most of the descriptive language is beautiful and luxurious, sometimes it could be a right pain! However, that wasn't very often. I still believe it is a vividly described, strangely uplifting and masterly told tale! It's brutal, dramatic, expressive, compelling, extraordinary... Need I go on?
The book is split into three parts, and although each part is quite different, they are all important. Even if learning about Pi's life and religion in the first section isn't your cup of tea, you might love the events of the second section (that was my favourite part)! What's not to love about the island? So, where was I going with this? Oh yes! The character of Pi. Personally, I loved Pi's narrative and basically his whole character – he's extremely interesting! I haven't seen the film yet, and so I wonder how they'll channel all his inner thoughts into motion picture... But, regardless of how the film does this, Yann Martel did it amazingly!
To conclude, Life of Pi is a very interesting read with beautiful descriptive passages and wonderful characters. You might need to just keep reading and reading until you really get into it, but I can assure you that this is an incredibly inventive (if not absurd) tale told by a clever and witty narrator.
Favourite Quote:
“Life is so beautiful that death has fallen in love with it, a jealous, possessive love that grabs at what it can. But life leaps over oblivion lightly, losing only a thing or two of no importance, and gloom is but the passing shadow of a cloud...”

Does Pi like animals? Surely that is mentioned somewhere in his stream of conscience? Somewhat plausible is the phrase ;)
ReplyDeleteI finished this book around two weeks ago, so I can't remember that much (the review was written around that time as well, but only posted now). I know that Pi had some understanding of animal psychology... Does that answer your question? He likes them, but he can also understand them... That probably isn't very helpful, but it's all I can remember on the spot.
DeleteIt was sort of rhetorical as he was stuck with so many animals it'd be ironic if, and not really likely that, he didn't like them. Or at least did come to like them. But animal psychology... Interesting. I can't say such a fact would stick in my head- I tend to remember a lot until I've read about a dozen books in between. If the novel is in parts though I tend to find it hard not to blur them so tend to write a review of the separate parts only if I've written it before starting the other part(s). That was sort of off-topic though... sorry.
DeleteI thought it might be rhetorical. But when it comes to reading comments it's difficult to tell what emotion the reader is trying to portray... I mean, it's just text, isn't it? You can't tell if someone is being sarcastic or anything... And don't be sorry about going off-topic. People say the most interesting things when they go off on a tangent... :)
DeleteNice review! I saw you were looking at my blog! :D

ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! I can't wait to see the film! :P
DeleteI honestly thought this was just okay. When you said that you thought it was a tiny bit slow. I felt that the whole time. It didn't really pick up for me :/
ReplyDeleteAt least you were able to enjoy it. I wonder how everything will compare on the big screen.
Me and this other person had this discussion about it. Do you think that the tale he told was reality? I don't know how to say it without spoiling anything for others.
I'm not sure. I think it probably was... Or rather, I want it to be reality! Many of my friends have seen the film and have absolutely loved it, so I honestly can't wait to see it. It's a shame you didn't particularly enjoy it.... I can see what you mean though. If I hadn't got into it properly, then I wouldn't have continued.
DeleteI really want to read this book. I've heard a lot of great things about it.
ReplyDeleteI love the way your reviewing books now, with the quote and word and why. They really stand out compared to other people's reviews.

DeleteThis was a fantastic book. It was quite long but so different from anything that I have read in recent years. I did not see the movie but I would like to because of reading the book! I Highly recommend it if you have not already read it. Very inspiring and uplifting.
