Lily has left a red notebook full of challenges on a favorite bookstore shelf, waiting for just the right person to come along and accept its dares. But is Dash that right guy? Or are Dash and Lily only destined to trade dares, dreams, and desires in the notebook they pass back and forth at locations across New York? Could their in-person selves possibly connect as well as their notebook versions? Or will they be a comic mismatch of disastrous proportions? Rachel Cohn and David Levithan have written a story that will have readers perusing bookstore shelves, looking and longing for a red notebook of their own.
My Thoughts: This isn't a book that makes you think, or a book you have to concentrate really hard on whilst reading... It's a book that makes you smile – and sometimes that's just what you're looking for! It's short and sweet, and easy to dip into... Really, Dash and Lily's Book of Dares is like a little ray of sunshine... Despite being set around Christmas time! Ha. Lily's character comes across as endearing and innocent, but also feisty and sarcastic – she's really believable! It's the same with Dash as well. But seeing as this is a collaboration between Rachel Cohn and David Levithan, the authenticness of the characters is honestly no surprise! I do hope they collaborate more in the future...
The writing is witty (once again, no surprises there...) and the narratives work so well together. But, I have to say, the one thing that I think makes this story so lovable is the fact that it's not completely unrealistic. I mean, this could actually happen to you! There are no fairies, or magic, or any fantastical elements – this story could honestly happen in real life! And who wouldn't want it too? Once again, this story is light and funny. It isn't 'wow', but nevertheless, I recommend to any John Green fans!
Favourite Quote:
“I was horribly bookish, to the point of coming right out and saying it, which I knew was not socially acceptable. I particularly loved the adjective bookish, which I found other people used about as often as ramrod or chum or teetotaler.”
The Word: Why?
This book is simply delightful. As I said above, it's short and sweet, it's light and funny & it puts a smile on your face. Delightful is all I can say about it... Want a break from all the tough stuff you've been reading recently? This is the book for you!

Wonderful book review Ruby! I really love your concept of the one word to describe the book, and your writing is so clear and colorful! Dash and Lily's Book of Dares seems like a wonderful book, maybe I'll try it out soon!

DeleteI've seen several reviews saying the same thing, and this just looks so cute and adorable. I have a copy of it, I just need the time to read it. I love the quote you put up; 'bookish' is a word that should be used more often, don't you think? ;) Beautiful review, Ruby! :)

DeleteI LOVED this BOOOK!!! <333 It's so sweet and Christmas-y and, oh yeah, HILARIOUS! The Santa scene is my favorite part! It's just THE most hilarious part, in my mind, at least. GO DASH! XD I've read their other collaboration Nick and Norah and watched the movie and reviewed and you should definitely check out their Nick and Norah Infinite Playlist story because it's totally different, and even though Dash and Lily will always be my favorite and special in my heart, Nick and Norah is something special as well. And then, after that, you can go and watch the movie! It's super HILARIOUS! XD
